✉️ How Veterans Can Write to Congress: A Guide to Civic Participation

An Educational Resource from Covenant of Courage

At Covenant of Courage, we believe that every veteran—especially those injured in uniform—deserves to be heard. One powerful way to elevate your voice is through civic engagement. While we are a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit and do not engage in lobbying or endorse political candidates, we do provide educational tools to help veterans and supporters participate in democratic processes.

📬 Why Write to Your Elected Officials?

Writing to your senators, representatives, or local officials helps inform them of the real-life experiences of constituents. When they hear directly from veterans, they gain a better understanding of the challenges faced by those who served—especially those discharged due to injury or illness during training.

Your story matters. Your service matters. Your voice matters.

🛠️ What to Include in Your Letter

  • Who you are: Briefly introduce yourself. If you’re a veteran, say so.

  • Why you’re writing: Share your personal experience or concern.

  • The issue: Be specific about the topic—e.g., access to benefits, transitional support, or recognition for training-related injuries.

  • A respectful tone: Elected officials are more receptive to constructive input.

  • A call to care: Instead of demanding action, encourage awareness and compassion.

🧠 Sample Opening

Dear [Representative/Senator],

My name is [First Last], and I’m a [branch] veteran who was discharged after sustaining an injury during training. I’m writing to share how that experience shaped my life—and to respectfully ask for your attention to the challenges faced by others like me.

🏛️ Where to Send It

  • Your state or local officials: Use your state legislature’s website

📎 Remember:

Civic participation is a cornerstone of democracy. By sharing your story, you help shape a more informed and compassionate future for all who serve.

🕊️ Covenant of Courage empowers veterans to share their stories, connect with others, and educate the public on issues impacting injured service members. We do not engage in lobbying or political campaigns.
