Launch Day: The #ReasonableRanks Campaign Fights for Veterans Left Behind

By Kirk Carlson | USMC Veteran | Founder, Covenant of Courage

Today marks the official launch of the #ReasonableRanks campaign—a movement powered by Covenant of Courage to bring justice, visibility, and reform to a forgotten group of American veterans.

Every year, thousands of service members are honorably discharged before ever setting foot on a battlefield. Their discharge isn’t the result of misconduct or lack of commitment—it’s often due to injuries or illnesses sustained during training. These are men and women who stepped forward, swore an oath, and were prepared to give everything for their country. But instead of being reassigned, supported, or recognized, they were quietly sent home—frequently without the career options, health protections, or respect afforded to their peers.

This campaign exists for them.

Why #ReasonableRanks Matters

The military system lacks a fair and consistent policy for non-combat injuries incurred during training. Many service members never even receive the chance to recover or be reassigned to a support role—despite their willingness to continue serving. We believe this must change.

The #ReasonableRanks campaign calls for:

  • Career reassignment options for those medically discharged in training

  • Protection of benefits (healthcare, retirement) for these veterans

  • Public recognition through proclamations, resolutions, and awareness

  • Long-overdue policy reform at the Department of Defense and Congressional level

What We’ve Done So Far

We’ve already gathered over 140 petition signatures from civilians, veterans, educators, and advocates who support this mission. We've begun contacting city councils and public officials across Southern California, and we're preparing to present these stories before legislative bodies.

Today’s launch is about raising awareness—starting conversations, engaging our communities, and collecting stories that deserve to be heard.

This isn’t just a campaign. It’s a moral call to action.

How You Can Help

  • Sign the Petition: https://chng.it/5yXYvkBtMR

  • Share the Hashtag: #ReasonableRanks

  • Tell a Story: If you or someone you know was discharged during training, we want to hear from you.

  • Follow Us: Stay connected for weekly updates, events, and testimonials.

Because service doesn’t start on the battlefield—it starts with the oath. Let’s make sure every oath is honored.
