Morning Operations Update: Eaton Fire – Tuesday, January 14

The California Interagency Incident Management Team 5 continues to lead firefighting efforts against the Eaton Fire, which has been burning in the Eaton Canyon area near Pasadena since January 7. As of this morning, the fire has consumed over 14,100 acres and is 33% contained.

Fire Details and Current Conditions

Acres Burned: 14,117

Containment: 33%

Structures Threatened: 39,428

Structures Destroyed: 1,902

Structures Damaged: 258

Civilian Fatalities: 11

Firefighter Injuries: 5

Total Personnel Assigned: 3,408

The fire’s rapid growth is being driven by strong Santa Ana winds and extremely dry conditions. A Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 6:00 PM on Wednesday, January 15, with expected northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph, gusting up to 55 mph, and relative humidity as low as 10%. These conditions increase the likelihood of extreme fire behavior and rapid spread.

Evacuations and Assistance

Mandatory evacuation orders are in place for multiple communities in the fire’s path. Residents are urged to follow evacuation orders immediately to ensure their safety and allow emergency personnel to operate effectively.

To support impacted residents, Local Assistance and Disaster Resource Centers are open daily from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM, providing essential services and resources.

Firefighting Operations

Over 3,400 firefighters are actively working to contain the fire, employing a wide array of resources, including:

375 engines

16 helicopters

29 bulldozers

50 crews

90 water tenders

Crews are focused on reinforcing containment lines, protecting structures, and minimizing the fire’s impact on nearby communities.

Safety Recommendations

Residents are advised to take the following precautions:

1. Stay Informed – Monitor official updates on fire conditions, evacuation orders, and air quality advisories.

2. Prepare for Evacuation – Have an emergency kit ready, and ensure all family members are aware of the evacuation plan.

3. Limit Outdoor Activities – Poor air quality poses health risks, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions.

Looking Ahead

The cause of the Eaton Fire remains under investigation. Fire officials emphasize public safety as their highest priority and are working tirelessly to manage the fire and assist affected communities. With conditions likely to change rapidly, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and prepared.
