Your Words Matter More Than You Know
By Kirk Carlson, USMC Veteran | Founder, Covenant of Courage
Every so often, a message comes through that reminds me why I keep pushing forward—why I launched the #ReasonableRanks campaign in the first place.
A recent comment read:
“Thank you for fighting for our freedom. I hope they put you back where you want to go. I’m praying for your recovery on your knee as well. God bless you and your family, honey.”
It stopped me in my tracks. Not because it was dramatic or political—but because it was human. It was personal. It was real.
And it reminded me: your words matter more than you know.
We’re Not Just Fighting for Policies—We’re Fighting for People
When a veteran gets injured, there’s often an unspoken expectation that their story ends there. That their service is over. That they should quietly accept a disability rating, pack up their uniform, and move on.
But for many of us, we still have more to give.
We’re still capable of serving in non-combat roles.
We’re still passionate about mentoring, supporting, and leading.
We just need the chance to continue in a different way.
That’s what the #ReasonableRanks campaign is all about:
Creating non-combat reassignment pathways
Protecting retirement and healthcare benefits for the injured
Ending discharge practices that erase service instead of honoring it
Why Support Like This Matters
When someone takes the time to say, “I’m praying for your recovery,” or “God bless you and your family,” it hits deeper than you might imagine.
Because behind every policy we’re trying to change, there’s a person—a veteran, a family member, a friend—still holding on to their purpose.
Your encouragement fuels our mission.
