2025 Update: Women Veteran Statistics You Need to See

By Covenant of Courage

As we continue to elevate the voices of all who’ve served, 2025 brings critical updates on a growing yet often underrepresented population—women veterans. Their numbers, needs, and impact are shaping a new chapter in military and veteran affairs.

📊 The Numbers at a Glance

According to the most recent data from the VA and Department of Defense:

  • Over 2 million women veterans now live in the United States.

  • Women currently make up about 11% of the total veteran population—a figure projected to rise to 18% by 2045.

  • Roughly 17% of new recruits into the military are women.

  • Women veterans are the fastest-growing demographic in both the VA health system and veteran service programs.

🏥 Health & Wellness Gaps

  • Women veterans are more likely to face challenges accessing gender-specific care, including mental health and reproductive services.

  • 1 in 3 women veterans report experiencing military sexual trauma (MST).

  • Rates of PTSD, depression, and anxiety are significantly higher among women veterans compared to male counterparts.

💼 Economic & Social Insights

  • Women veterans have higher educational attainment than non-veteran women and male veterans.

  • Despite this, they often face employment discrimination, lower pay, and underemployment after service.

  • Nearly 13% of homeless veterans are women—and that number is growing.

🏛 Policy, Progress & Challenges

  • In 2023, the PACT Act and other legislation began addressing exposure-related conditions, but women’s unique medical needs remain underfunded.

  • Only 1 in 4 women veterans feel the VA meets their needs “very well,” signaling a continued call for reform.

  • Representation in leadership is improving, but women still make up less than 5% of top leadership roles in major veterans organizations.

💪 The Future Is Female—and Veteran

Women veterans are not a niche group—they are patriots, caregivers, breadwinners, survivors, and leaders. As their numbers rise, so must our understanding, policies, and programs. Organizations like Covenant of Courage are advocating for equitable services, visibility, and policies that support all veterans—especially those too often overlooked.
