250 Years of Honor, Courage, and Commitment: The United States Marine Corps Birthday

ree

On November 10, 2025, the United States Marine Corps celebrates its 250th birthday—a milestone that honors not only a fighting force but an enduring brotherhood built on the principles of honor, courage, and commitment. For two and a half centuries, Marines have stood as America’s shield, its vanguard, and its conscience in the face of adversity.

A Legacy Born in 1775

The Marine Corps was born on November 10, 1775, when the Continental Congress established two battalions of Marines to serve aboard naval vessels during the Revolutionary War. Recruitment began at the historic Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, where ordinary men answered an extraordinary call—to fight for freedom and a fledgling nation.

From that humble beginning, the Marines forged a legacy that would echo through the ages. Their history is written in blood and bravery—from Tripoli to Iwo Jima, Chosin Reservoir to Fallujah, and countless battles in between. Wherever freedom was threatened, Marines were there—first to fight and last to leave.

A Brotherhood Like No Other

What sets the Marine Corps apart is not only its combat prowess but the unbreakable bond among those who wear the uniform. To be a Marine is to belong to something greater than oneself—a lifelong family bound by sacrifice and shared purpose.

The motto “Semper Fidelis”, Latin for Always Faithful, isn’t just a saying; it’s a way of life. It means faithfulness to country, to mission, and most importantly, to each other. That loyalty endures long after the battles have ended and the uniforms are hung up.

The Tradition Lives On

Every year, Marines across the globe—whether on base, aboard ship, or in combat—observe the Corps’ birthday with reverence and pride. The Marine Corps Birthday Ball and cake-cutting ceremony are time-honored traditions.

During the ceremony, the first slice of cake is presented from the oldest Marine present to the youngest Marine, symbolizing the passing of experience, wisdom, and legacy from one generation to the next. It’s a reminder that while the faces may change, the spirit of the Corps remains eternal.

Beyond the Battlefield

Marines are not defined solely by war, but by their unwavering service to others. From disaster relief and humanitarian aid to mentorship and leadership in their communities, Marines continue to live their values every day.

They exemplify resilience, discipline, and leadership in every arena—military or civilian. Once a Marine, always a Marine.

250 Years Strong

The 250th anniversary is not just a celebration of history—it’s a reaffirmation of purpose. It’s a tribute to those who gave their lives in the name of freedom, to those who carried the flag forward, and to those who continue to defend the ideals upon which America was built.

As the Marine Corps enters its next chapter, the mission remains the same: to defend, to lead, and to inspire.

Happy 250th Birthday, United States Marine Corps.

Semper Fidelis.
