Covenant of Courage: My Journey to Starting the Nonprofit
Covenant of Courage is deeply personal to me. I served in the United States Marine Corps as an Aircraft Rescue Firefighter. My time in the military was shaped by my commitment to service, particularly as I worked toward becoming a Staff Sergeant. Unfortunately, due to a medical condition, I was medically discharged before completing my career. I had planned to continue in the Corps and rise to staff sergeant, but my discharge marked the beginning of a very different journey.
After leaving the military, I faced the harsh reality that many veterans face: when you can no longer serve, the support often fades away. I struggled with feelings of isolation and abandonment as I navigated the difficult process of dealing with my medical issues. It was a lonely road, and I know many others have walked a similar path. There’s often a lack of support and understanding, and that’s something I aim to change.
I ended up becoming homeless due to bad advice and a lack of resources. But the Marine Corps spirit in me kicked in. I reminded myself of my identity as a U.S. Marine and began taking ownership of my actions. Slowly but surely, I got back on track. This experience fueled my desire to create Covenant of Courage—a platform for veterans to connect, share experiences, and advocate for the respect and support we deserve.
Covenant of Courage’s Approach to Supporting Veterans
At Covenant of Courage, we are not your typical nonprofit. This organization was founded out of my personal frustration with the lack of support for veterans, especially those like me who have faced discrimination after being discharged. I wanted to create a platform where veterans could share their stories and have their voices heard.
This is a nonprofit with teeth. Our mission is not just to offer support; it’s to provide real, actionable help. We are committed to helping veterans fight discrimination and ensuring they have the legal and moral backing to hold institutions accountable. We provide resources for veterans who need legal assistance and who want to assert their rights.
Covenant of Courage aims to make it easier for veterans to access the help they need. I understand firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate the VA system, having faced my own struggles in securing a disability rating. I started with a 30% rating, moved up to 50%, and I’m working toward 80% or 100%. I’ve had to dig through a lot of red tape and unreliable information, and I want to make that process smoother for others.
Sharing Knowledge and Resources for the Benefit of All
One of our main goals is to create an environment where veterans can share knowledge and support one another. The system is often frustrating, and it can feel like you’re doing everything on your own. But with Covenant of Courage, we want to change that. We aim to create a community where veterans can easily find the information and resources they need to succeed.
If you’re a veteran facing similar struggles or have ideas on how we can improve, please reach out. We are here for you, and we’re ready to help you navigate this journey. We believe that by supporting each other, we can make a real difference. Let’s keep the conversation going and work together to improve the lives of veterans everywhere.
