Salute Their Sacrifice, Share Their Stories: Honoring Our Fallen While Fighting for the Living

By Kirk Carlson, USMC Veteran | Founder, Covenant of Courage

As Memorial Day approaches, we are reminded that freedom is not free—it is earned by the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering service of those who gave everything in the name of duty.

This month, the #ReasonableRanks campaign is not just fighting for policy reform. We’re also honoring the fallen—by saluting their sacrifice and sharing their stories.

Because remembering them means carrying forward the values they served for: dignity, opportunity, and purpose for all who wear the uniform.

Why Their Stories Matter

Behind every name engraved in marble is a family that remembers. A child who grew up too fast. A spouse who carries a folded flag. A unit that left no one behind.

These heroes lived with purpose, served with pride, and believed in something greater than themselves. We honor them not only with words—but by continuing the fight to support the brothers and sisters they left behind.

Fighting for the Living, Honoring the Fallen

The #ReasonableRanks campaign fights for injured veterans who still want to serve. Veterans who, though no longer fit for combat, are still capable of leadership, logistics, mentorship, and more.

We believe that honoring our fallen means taking care of the living. It means:

  • Providing injured veterans a path to continue serving

  • Preserving retirement and healthcare benefits for those forced to separate

  • Ensuring no one is discarded after they’ve risked everything

When we salute the fallen, we must also stand for the living.

Share Their Legacy

This Memorial Day, we invite you to share the story of a fallen hero who inspired you.

Whether it’s a loved one, a battle buddy, or someone you never met but deeply respect—tell us who they were, what they stood for, and how we can honor them by doing better for today’s veterans.

Your voice can help bring healing, awareness, and impact.
