Standing for Justice: The #ReasonableRanks Campaign for Injured Veterans
By Kirk Carlson, USMC Veteran & Founder, Covenant of Courage
Across the nation, injured veterans are being discharged—often quietly, without retirement, recognition, or the option to continue serving in non-combat or support roles. Many of these service members, still capable of contributing their skills, experience forced separation simply because our current military policy lacks flexibility for reassignment accommodations. It’s not just a career cut short; it’s a loss of dignity and fairness.
That’s why we launched the #ReasonableRanks campaign.
This movement calls on the Department of Defense and Congress to implement common-sense reforms that would:
Allow career continuation through non-combat or support role reassignment
Provide fair and consistent discharge reviews
Protect retirement benefits for those who served honorably and are still capable of service
Our goal is to end the systemic discharge of injured veterans who, like many of us, simply needed a second chance—to serve differently, not less.
In the image above, four diverse veterans stand in unity before the U.S. Capitol. One is seated in a wheelchair, another in camouflage, another in civilian attire, and another in Navy blues. Each represents the thousands of injured service members—visible and invisible—who deserve fairness, not forced discharge.
The image says it all: our veterans are still ready to serve. Now we need leadership ready to support them.

Together, we can ensure that no service member is left behind simply because they were injured in the line of duty.
