96 Voices, One Mission — Redefining What It Means to Serve
By Kirk Carlson, USMC Veteran | Founder, Covenant of Courage
As of today, 96 people have signed the #ReasonableRanks petition. That’s 96 individuals standing up for the idea that getting injured in the line of duty should not mean the end of a veteran’s career.
And this movement is just getting started.
Behind each signature is a story:
A Marine medically retired just short of 20 years.
A Navy corpsman who was told her brain injury made her a “liability.”
A military family watching their loved one lose purpose, benefits, and dignity overnight.
Why This Matters
In today’s military, there are no clear reassignment paths for injured veterans—even when they’re qualified to serve in non-combat or support roles. The result is a system that discharges people who still have so much to offer. They lose more than a uniform. They lose:
Their sense of purpose
Their retirement
Their chance to continue making a difference
And the military loses dedicated, experienced service members.
The Mission of #ReasonableRanks
We’re calling on the Department of Defense and Congress to take three concrete steps:
Create reassignment options for injured service members
Protect retirement and healthcare benefits for those discharged due to injury
Acknowledge and support non-combat roles as a legitimate form of continued service
This isn’t about lowering standards. It’s about redefining service to include the many ways veterans can still contribute—with wisdom, skill, and heart.
What’s Next
We’re just four signatures away from our first major milestone: 100 supporters. From there, we’ll grow stronger—with more stories, more outreach, and more visibility.
Whether you’re a veteran, a family member, or a civilian who cares—your voice matters.
