Rising Momentum: #ReasonableRanks Campaign Surpasses 140 Signatures and Expands Regional Outreach

By Kirk Carlson | USMC Veteran | Founder, Covenant of Courage

The #ReasonableRanks campaign, launched by veteran-led nonprofit Covenant of Courage, continues to gain traction as it pushes forward in its mission to reform military discharge policies that leave too many injured service members behind. What began as a grassroots effort has now grown into a regional movement, powered by community engagement, partnerships, and most importantly—stories.

This week, the campaign proudly surpassed 140 petition signatures, each representing a voice that believes in justice, dignity, and second chances for injured veterans. From busy tabling events to heartfelt testimonials shared online, the response has been overwhelming—and deeply inspiring.

At the heart of the campaign is a simple but urgent demand: give injured service members the option to continue serving in non-combat or support roles. Far too often, these men and women are discharged without the opportunity to shift into roles that accommodate their physical limitations, despite their readiness and willingness to serve. The campaign also advocates for protecting retirement and healthcare benefits for veterans discharged due to service-connected injuries.

Highlights of Recent Progress:

  • Signature Milestone: Surpassed 140 verified signatures from veterans, civilians, students, and advocates

  • Community Events: Successful Memorial Day outreach in Corona and surrounding cities, with fundraising and educational efforts

  • Veteran Testimonials: Stories from Vietnam-era and post-9/11 veterans have added emotional depth and credibility to the movement

  • Legislative Outreach: Dozens of emails sent to elected officials, city councils, and veteran organizations to request formal support

  • Media & Advocacy Expansion: Outreach to local newspapers, radio stations, and community foundations is underway

“We’re not asking for special treatment. We’re asking for the chance to keep serving, even if that means shifting roles,” said founder Kirk Carlson, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who started the campaign after witnessing the struggles of fellow service members.

As the campaign continues to grow, the next goal is reaching 200 signatures and securing formal letters of support from local municipalities and veteran-friendly organizations. Covenant of Courage has also begun preparing testimonial packets to share with state and federal legislators.

How You Can Help:

  • Sign the petition: https://chng.it/5yXYvkBtMR

  • Share the campaign on social media using #ReasonableRanks

  • Submit a veteran story or message of support to be featured on the blog

  • Contact your local representatives and ask them to support policy reform for injured service members

This is more than a campaign—it’s a movement grounded in experience, resilience, and a belief that no veteran should be discarded because of injury. Together, we’re building a future where every warrior is given the chance to continue their mission.
